I am passionate about interpreting and teaching interpreting. My innate curiosity and love of teaching and research drives me to discover what kinds of instructional materials really help students become employment-ready, and which materials can support working interpreters in keeping their skills at optimal levels. Also, interpreter educators are dear to my heart and I am eager to encourage them in their important work by offering these instructional materials.
When I was Professor and Director of the Master of Arts in Interpreting Program at Gallaudet University I knew that if my students could have easy access to well-developed practice materials that they could use for home study, their skills could develop in a reliable progression that leads to success. Each year, like many other interpreter educators, I created my own teaching materials. Through my own teaching experiences I gained greater insight into which types of materials and exercises improved student outcomes. Extensive pilot testing of materials, concepts, and exercises preceded the release of each of the products described in my website.
The Effective Interpreting Series is an eight-volume series focused on building interpreting skill from a strong foundation in language proficiency. When completed, there will be ten volumes in the EIS.
Fingerspelled Word Recognition through Rapid Serial Visual Processing is a contribution to the field that I am very proud of. This approach to improving fingerspelled word recognition is based on 20 years of research and has proven results and can be used in ASL or interpreting classes.
The three volumes in The Interpreting in Professional Settings Series are unique and valuable assets for any interpreter educator or interpreter. They stand apart from other materials because they focus on the value of observational learning and contain naturally occurring language and unrehearsed interpretations.
