When I was Professor and Director of the Master of Arts in Interpreting Program at Gallaudet University, I wanted my students to succeed at the highest levels possible. I felt that if my students could have easy access to well-developed training materials, their skills could develop more rapidly. I began to develop my own teaching materials and with each development, I gained greater insight into student's needs. Extensive pilot testing preceded the release of each volume in The EIS.
The Effective Interpreting Series provides information, exercises and accompanying DVD material on intralingual skills (within English or within ASL) and interlingual skills. Taking time to develop intralingual skills, whether you are a new or seasoned interpreter, can ensure a strong foundation for more complex interlingual skills such as translation or interpretation. Three of the volumes (Translation, Consecutive Interpreting and Simultaneous Interpreting) focus on interlingual skills and message transfer. One of the most valuable aspects of the EIS is the strong focus on developing self-analysis skills through using The Five-Step Follow Up. This process guides you through a closer look at your own work and helps you find ways to improve.
The Effective Interpreting Series can be used as part of a formal curriculum, as is currently the case in many Interpreter Education Programs nationwide. The EIS can also be used independently to earn CEUs for Certification Maintenance.
I am very fortunate that DawnSignPress and Joe Dannis believed in my vision from its inception in the early 1990s. With DSP's support I have been able to publish 7 of the 10 volumes in The Effective Interpreting Series. DawnSignPress produced top quality video under my direction and each volume of The EIS has a DVD that is carefully keyed to the concepts and exercises in the accompanying volume. |
